Summary : SharePoint 2013 – The Concept of “Result Types” in Search,What are “Result Types” in SharePoint 2013
In the earlier post we discussed the new Hover Panel(or Preview Feature) in SharePoint 2013 Search where for each search result that gets displayed on the search results page users can now “Hover Over” the result to view a Preview box for that Item along with some Informative Metadata. This Metadata typically Contains Information like “Last Modified” and “Contributors include” and a glimpse of the document via links under “Take a look inside”. The Hover Panel is definitely good for End users, but what makes it awesome for admins is the ability to Customize the Hover Panel using Result Types. I am sure that you agree that fact that the Information about the document (we are talking about the metadata in Preview pane) is not always what you would like to see and you would probably want to add or remove some Info from that Hover Template. With Result Types you can do just that.
Result Type rules determine what ‘type’ of result you’re looking at, and the correct hover panel will be shown based on those rules. You can find Result types in site collection Site Settings under “Search”
How does Result Types Work? SharePoint administrators can create a new display template in HTML and then add it to the Result types (For more info see my post on Display Templates). Here admins can specify Result Conditions & Result Actions for this Template.
Result Conditions or Rules – Determine what ‘type’ of result you will be looking at. For example a result condition could be something like
Match these types of content
Result Actions – The Correct hover panel that will be shown based on those rules. For example a Result Action for the above rule would be
* For People search results, search will even show you documents that person has authored that are relevant to your search query.
