TimeLine WebPart –
Timeline has been introduced in SharePoint 2013 for adding a new functionality similar to MS project Server where admins can display tasks in a timeline with the start and end dates. Users have ability to display or remove tasks or subtasks from the timeline and display tasks and subtasks with various colors or Intends. Timeline is added to every Task list by default but you can also add tht “TIMELINE” Webpart to any SharePoint page. Timeline webpart has many benefits and we are going to discuss them in detail in this blog post.
How to Add a Timeline WebPart – To add a Timeline webpart to a SharePoint page Edit the page and select “Insert tab” in the ribbon. Select Web Part and under “Content Rollup” select Timeline. If you do not see the Timeline webpart enable
Timeline Webpart data Source – Timeline Webpart needs a Source to display the tasks in it. One of the good features of this webpart is that the Source of Timeline can be set to any Task list across sites and Site Collections.Once you add the webpart simply edit the webpart properties and expand “Timeline” section. For this example, I have added Web URL of a sibling Subsite where I have a Task list “Project Tasks”. As soon as I click “Verify URL” the Type and Source gets populated. You can also select the Souce List and View Name from the properties available.

How to Add a Task in Timeline – You can add Tasks to Timeline by adding Tasks to your Tasks list and then adding them to Timeline. Navigate to your list and add Taks to it.When you Create a task click on “…” (call up menu) to open task preview window. Here you can select “ADD TO TIMELINE” to add the task to the above timeline. You can remove it same way with “Remove from timeline”.
One of the other great features of timeline is that now you can Color the tasks and Intent the Tasks in the timeline.
Before Indenting the task lets create a subtask first.
To create a subtask select a Task and click on “…” the preview pane. Next click on “CREATE SUBTASK”
and once you click on “CREATE SUBTASK” the new task list is put on edit mode.. You can simply create a subtask here and then click on new row to save the changes. This is how it looks when you create a subtask. Click on All Task view to go back to the Original view.
Notice that the new subtask is Indented… Indent is a new cool feature introduced in Task and Timeline.
Project Summary WebPart – Project Summary is essentially a Timeline Webpart which is added by default to the Project Site Templates. This webpart has options to display Summary of the Tasks with Timeline, Late and Upcoming task options.
